As two young Hongkongers seek asylum in the United Kingdom, their journeys reveal the distance and solitude of exile, as they confront a hostile bureaucracy and the xenophobic reflexes of the host society. The Water Buffalo
de Anaïs Mak
Documentary · 2026 · 57 mn ·
One morning, the director’s father, Mai Gang, sets out to build a map that slowly spreads across the living room floor. As it grows, the route of his clandestine escape to Hong Kong resurfaces. This dialogue-driven film looks back at the mass exodus from Communist China during the 1970s. Shot within the quiet intimacy of the family home, the film strikes a sharp contrast between the domestic calm and the story being told: the vastness of the sea occupies the floor, while political peril sits at the dining table. Through the physical reality of this handmade map, accompanied by the recreation of the objects and gestures required for the crossing, Mai Gang makes tangible the impossibility of the journey undertaken fifty years ago.

You Alright, Mr. Fox?
by Michael Mui
Experimental · 2023 · 10 min 24 s · VOSTFRR
You Alright, Mr. Fox? is an experimental documentary short that follows the director’s early days after moving to London, as he confronts trauma and begins a process of self-repair. The film brings together footage from a family trip to London 20 years ago, when the director was eight years old, with images of his present life alone in the city. Through this dialogue between past and present, it captures solitude, disorientation, inner struggle, and the small yet deeply real emotions that emerge in an unfamiliar place. Both a conversation with the self and a letter to one’s younger self, the film searches for a way out between memory and reality.
