One morning, the director’s father, Mai Gang, sets out to build a map that slowly spreads across the living room floor. As it grows, the route of his clandestine escape to Hong Kong resurfaces. This dialogue-driven film looks back at the mass exodus from Communist China during the 1970s. Shot within the quiet intimacy of the family home, the film strikes a sharp contrast between the domestic calm and the story being told: the vastness of the sea occupies the floor, while political peril sits at the dining table.
